Taking an Unexpected Plunge / by Kevin Swantek

When I woke up Monday morning, I had no idea that I'd jumping into the rather cold Seattle Greenlake that evening. For anyone unaware, there is a facebook meme making the rounds, called Winter Challenge 2014. What is the "Winter Challenge 2014"? It's a miserable exercise where somebody videotapes themself jumping into a cold body of water, and afterwards they nominate a group of people to take the plunge. Participants have 24 hours to complete the challenge. I was nominated by a childhood friend, whom prior to running an Ugly Sweater 5k with in November, I hadn't seen or spoke to probably since our 10 year high school reunion.

Another friend volunteered (almost a little too quickly), to video tape my plunge. The big jump occurred quickly, and without too much thought. The water was cold, and I climbed out of the lake, and back on to the dock, as fast as I could. It was pointed out to me by my videotaping friend that I had a distant audience that cheered me on during my jump. It ending up being a great experience, and I'm glad I forced myself to make time in my day for it. If you have the time (challenge, or not), I highly recommend jumping into a cold body of water while it's still winter.
